Communication
Andrew Czysz Jr. ’27 came to college with one goal set in mind — to someday be a broadcaster for the NFL. He was recruited by Carthage and received an Esports Scholarship for his broadcasting skills in high school. Majoring in communication, Andrew is making his way into his future career as lead esports broadcaster at Carthage and as an announcer for the local Racine Horlick Rebels high school football team. He was featured in the Racine Journal Times twice, once for interviewing Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green, and another for calling a WIHSEA Rocket League playoff game between Racine Case and Racine Horlick. He won third place in WBA’s Sports Play By Play for a Carthage esports Overwatch game commentary. Additionally, he was featured on TMJ4 for his involvement as Horlick’s football announcer.
Andrew is thankful to be able to utilize Carthage’s career development program, The Aspire Center, to further fine-tune his resume, develop cover letters, and practice interviews for future broadcasting internships. He feels supported by the staff and faculty at Carthage and is grateful that he is given the incredible opportunities that would be hard to find somewhere else. “My journey is on a rare and unique path,” says Andrew. “I’m grateful Carthage allows me to pursue it.”

Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because of its communication program, esports broadcasting opportunities, small class sizes, and the beautiful atmosphere surrounding its campus. The faculty and staff members are welcoming and filled with a willingness to assist the needs of motivated students, no matter what field of interest they are in.”
Faculty mentors
“Carthage’s faculty members have greatly impacted my career and life. All the professors I have had so far possess a willingness to develop an awesome working relationship with their students. A couple of examples include Professor Helene DeGross and Professor Lynn Brownson. Prof. DeGross has a charming personality and is willing to assist her students at all times. Prof. Brownson’s lectures are unique and make you really think about key concepts within communication.”
“Professor Jonathan Bruning, Rocco LaMacchia, and Allie Wallace have also increased my chances of success. Every time I have personal issues come up or questions about assignments, one of them are always there to assist. Ms. Wallace is a terrific student success advisor who knows how to connect and emphasize with students while helping with planning out future schedules. Prof. Bruning is a great faculty advisor who has guided me in the right direction in terms of classes to take since I became a sophomore. Mr. LaMacchia, my financial aid guru, has been with me since Carthage became my number one destination after high school. If it wasn’t for him, my experience here would be a little different. I am very grateful for him.”
Campus involvement
“My extracurricular involvement at Carthage includes being a lead esports broadcaster. This position is similar to sports broadcasters, except with video games. In my tenure with Carthage esports, I have announced a total of 30 matches across video games like Overwatch 2, Super Smash Bros, and Rocket League. Every time I’m on the call, I see incredible feats accomplished by our teams and develop excellent working relationships with colleagues. On the broadcasts, I address the audience with a recap of what happened last week and deliver stats on two teams currently competing. This gives an audience a heads up for what to expect. Then, myself and a colleague commentate a match in a play-by-play and color commentary format. This experience is beneficial to my career path because I am passionate about broadcasting. My journey is on a rare and unique path, and I’m grateful Carthage allows me to pursue it.”
Career goal
“My career goal is to be an NFL broadcaster one day. Ever since I was about six, I had a passion for football. First, a desire to play football arose. However, I could not do it due to a condition called hydrocephalus. The next best thing would be pursuing a career in broadcasting because I always had respect for those people in the NFL. For the last two and a half years, I have created a career in broadcasting through competitive video games, and I branched out into sports opportunities via public address announcing. As I continue my path, football broadcasting will be within my possession soon locally through the Racine Raiders and the Friday Night Lights crew who cover high school football games in Racine, Wisconsin. A unique start encapsulates my career as a broadcaster now. Later on, I believe my hard work will better the odds of reaching my dream goal.”
Best study tip
“My best study tips for students involve taking good notes and attending all classes. This combination has worked for me while at Carthage. Another study tip would be to use flashcards. If a professor gives you a review sheet, go through their PowerPoints, fill out the study guide, and write those concepts on the flashcards. Study them over and over until you memorize them for a particular test. One final study tip is discipline. As a college student, you have a sole responsibility of making sure you arrive to class on time, do your work correctly/effectively, and maintain good grades, while balancing outside barriers such as personal and social livelihood. It can be a lot to handle, but if you can make something like a Google spreadsheet to help you keep track of assignments, then by all means, just do it!”
